Workshop Description: Play Therapy Seminal Theories are fundamental for understanding play therapy. The Seminal Theories are Child Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy, Theraplay, Gestalt Play Therapy, Adlerian Play Therapy, Ecosystemic Play Therapy, Jungian Analytic Play Therapy and Psychoanalytic Play Therapy. The Golden Thread will be discussed in terms of sewing together concepts that holds together to understand theories. This workshop will provide lecture and basic understanding of each of the theories, history of each theory, and application. Case examples of at least two theoretical orientations will be discussed. The clinical reasoning for informing play therapy room set up will be discussed. Set up for different spaces depending on theoretical orientation, space availability, population, indoors/outdoors, and mobile/stationary spaces. The most important factor in play therapy is the relationship. This workshop is helpful in the pathway towards becoming credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist™ through the Association for Play Therapy. The clinical reasoning for informing play therapy room set up will be discussed. Set up for different spaces depending on theoretical orientation, space availability, population, indoors/outdoors, and mobile/stationary spaces. Basic play therapy skills (structuring, tracking, reflection of content and process, limit setting and returning responsibility) will be introduced. 

Learning objectives: After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify historically significant play therapy theories 
  • Describe what it means to be a “seminal” theory 
  • Compare and contrast at least four foundational theories
  • Describe, in general, methods of at least two seminal theories 
  • List at least one theorist for at least six seminal play therapy theories 
  • Articulate the participant’s preference for a theory to use in their practice and describe why 
  • Explain how play therapy benefits children as a child’s language in play therapy and how toys enhance the benefits
  • Identify toys and materials that facilitate play therapy in permanent or traveling play room for both assessment and treatment
  • Describe how differences in theoretical orientation impact the tools (toys) for play therapy and utilize knowledge of play therapy theories to inform play therapy room set up 
  • List 10 toys that are often used in Child Centered Play Therapy and 10 used in Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy 
  • Demonstrate at least two play therapy skills
